The Ijaw nation in Delta State has formally thrown its political weight behind Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Sheriff Oborevwori for re-election in 2027, in what observers describe as a major political boost ahead of the next general elections.

 

The endorsement was announced on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, during a grand reception organised in honour of Governor Oborevwori in Bomadi by the Ijaw National Congress, attracting top political leaders, traditional rulers, and stakeholders from across Delta State and beyond.

 

The endorsement followed a motion moved by Julius Pondi, calling for the Ijaw people to support both President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori for a second term.

 

The motion, seconded by Oboro Preyor, was put to a voice vote by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, and was unanimously adopted by the crowd.

 

As part of the highpoint of the event, The Delta Ijaw Traditional Rulers Forum conferred the title “Izonebimiewei” (the man that does good) on Governor Oborevwori, in recognition of his developmental strides across Ijaw communities.

 

Addressing the massive gathering, Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude for the endorsement and honour, describing it as one of the most significant recognitions of his administration.

 

He disclosed that his government has so far committed over ₦400 billion to infrastructure in Ijaw areas, covering roads, bridges, schools, and healthcare facilities.

 

Key projects highlighted include the Bomadi–Gbaregolor Road, Ohoror–Bomadi Road, Oporoza township roads, internal roads in Patani and Ogulagha, and ongoing Ayakoromo bridge.

 

“I remain grateful for the unwavering support of the Ijaw people, which strengthened me through challenging times. This endorsement will not be taken for granted,” he said.

 

Also speaking, Douye Diri commended Oborevwori’s efforts in riverine development, noting that terrain should no longer be an excuse for lack of infrastructure.

 

He urged the Ijaw people to remain united to strengthen their political relevance.

President of the INC, Benjamin Okaba, described the event as a strategic engagement to deepen collaboration with the Delta State Government. 

 

He acknowledged ongoing projects while calling for more investments in roads, healthcare, and education in Ijaw communities.

 

Speaker Emomotimi Guwor noted that the endorsement reflects visible development across Ijaw communities, citing multiple infrastructure projects as evidence of the governor’s commitment.

 

The event recorded a massive turnout of political leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and women organisations, underscoring what stakeholders described as a rare show of unity within the Ijaw nation ahead of 2027.
