Victor Osimhen made his comeback from injury, but Galatasaray suffered a shock 2-0 home defeat to Genclerbirligi in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals.

The Nigerian striker had been sidelined for weeks with an arm injury and was only fit enough for a late cameo. He came on in the 78th minute in place of Renato Nhaga, with the holders already chasing the game and struggling to find a breakthrough.

Osimhen had returned to full training before the tie after missing four matches, and the plan was always for a short run-out as he works towards full match fitness.

The visitors struck first early in the second half. Firatcan Uzum reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box to fire Genclerbirligi ahead in the 51st minute.

Galatasaray pushed forward in search of a reply. Ahmed Kutucu forced a sharp save from close range, while Wilfried Singo thought he had equalised before his effort was ruled out for offside.

The tie was settled seven minutes from time. Adama Traore turned in from close range after a rebound to double the visitors’ lead and silence the home crowd.

Despite several attacking changes from coach Okan Buruk, including Osimhen’s introduction, Galatasaray could not claw their way back. Genclerbirligi held firm to book their place in the semi-finals.

The defeat ends Galatasaray’s impressive run of 10 unbeaten matches in the competition and brings their cup defence to an abrupt halt.
