A Fulani man has sparked a nationwide conversation on ethnic discrimination after sharing a video online in which he alleged that fellow passengers at a Lagos motor park refused to board a commercial bus with him solely because of his ethnic identity — forcing transport officials to refund his fare.

The man said the incident occurred after he had already paid for a trip from Lagos to Calabar with GIGM transport company.

According to his account, he had initially attempted to travel with GUO transport but was told the company had no service to Calabar that day.

He then proceeded to the GIGM park, purchased his ticket, and was preparing to board when other passengers on the bus objected to travelling in his company.

“After paying money and I was about to enter the bus, the passengers said they wouldn’t travel with a Fulani man, which made them refund my money,” he recounted in the video, which has since gone viral across multiple social media platforms.

He said transport officials apologised and returned his money, citing the passengers’ refusal as the reason he could not be accommodated on the vehicle.

Visibly pained by the experience, the man said he recorded and shared the video to draw public attention to what he described as a deeply troubling reflection of the ethnic fault lines that continue to fracture Nigerian society.

“I am doing this video to let the world know how we think in our country,” he said.

The clip has since ignited widespread condemnation online, with many Nigerians expressing shame and calling for a more tolerant and united society.

“This is really sad to hear. We need to do better as a country,” one user wrote. Another added, “Not fair at all. Everyone deserves respect.”

Rights advocates and social commentators have used the incident to renew calls for active measures against ethnic profiling and discrimination in public spaces, warning that such incidents, if left unchallenged, risk deepening existing divisions in an already fragile national social fabric.
