Rotimi Olowo, a former member of the Lagos state house of assembly, has declared his intention to contest for the Shomolu federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

 

He also promised to deliver more effective representation and expand social welfare programmes.

 

Olowo made the declaration at an event where he outlined plans to prioritise education, support for the elderly, and infrastructure development if elected.

 

The four-term lawmaker said his 16-year experience in the Lagos assembly has prepared him for the demands of federal legislative work, particularly in representing constituents and influencing development-focused policies.

 

 

He noted the need to deepen democratic dividends at the grassroots, including improved infrastructure and targeted interventions for vulnerable groups.

 

Olowo expressed concern over “low” number of students from Shomolu and Bariga in tertiary institutions, proposing a scholarship scheme to support those currently enrolled.

 

“How many students do we have in Shomolu and Bariga that are in the university or other institutions? I don’t think they’re up to 500. Why don’t we just put them on scholarship for the rest of their stay in school?” he said.

 

 

The former lawmaker also proposed a monthly stipend of N50,000 for residents aged 70 and above, describing it as a necessary step to improve the welfare of senior citizens.

 

“For the aged ones above 70 years, it’s high time we did something about their lives. Giving them a stipend of N50,000 per month is something that should run on autopilot,” he added.

 

Highlighting his record in office, Olowo cited road construction projects he facilitated in Shomolu, which he said improved connectivity and increased property values across the area.

 

He noted that the development of inner roads helped ease traffic congestion and enhanced movement within communities.

 

 

According to him, he has continued some social interventions even after leaving office, including a free school transport scheme aimed at supporting children and improving safety.

 

On legislative oversight, Olowo recalled his tenure as chairman of the house committee on budget in the Lagos assembly, where he said he ensured strict monitoring of public spending.

 

“We ensured that every naira in the budget was effectively spent, not the one used for frivolities,” he said.

 

The former lawmaker dismissed suggestions of a consensus arrangement, insisting that his experience and track record make him a strong contender for the seat.

 

 

Olowo, who represented Shomolu constituency I from 2007, previously contested for the house of representatives in 2023 but lost the party ticket to Ademorin Kuye.
