The Lagos Island Local Government has completed the reconstruction of four roads and disbursed N100m in grants to small businesses, artisans and youth entrepreneurs in the first year of the current administration, as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and stimulate economic activities in the council area.

The projects were highlighted in a one-year account of stewardship released by the administration of the council chairman, Taiwo Oyekan, on Monday.

According to the statement, the completed road projects include Onikoyi Street, Enu Owa Street, Kosoko Street and Oja Oba Road, while construction is ongoing on Issa Williams Street and Tajudeen Olusi Street, formerly known as Bridge Street.

The council also said work continues on the renovation of the old council secretariat and the reconstruction of the Gbobaniyi Fish Market along Adeniji Adele Road.

As part of its economic support initiatives, the administration said it provided N100m in grants to small and medium-scale enterprises, artisans and young entrepreneurs operating within the local government.

It added that vocational equipment, including industrial sewing machines, hairdryers, motorised pepper grinding machines, cosmetology tool kits and Point-of-Sale terminals, was distributed to artisans and technicians to support self-employment and business growth.

The council also reported interventions in the education sector, including free school bus services for pupils, a school feeding programme in public primary schools, the distribution of free JAMB and GCE forms to indigent students, as well as summer coaching and vocational training programmes for youths.

In the health sector, it said hundreds of elderly and vulnerable residents were enrolled in a health insurance scheme, while medical outreach programmes were conducted and a primary healthcare centre renovated.

The administration further said it strengthened environmental sanitation by acquiring a heavy-duty refuse truck and 10 waste collection tricycles, alongside routine desilting of drainage channels to reduce flooding in parts of the council area.

Other initiatives highlighted include monthly security meetings with relevant stakeholders, periodic town hall engagements with community groups and support for cultural festivals and heritage preservation.

The council said its next phase of projects would include the reconstruction of St. Patrick Primary School and Agarawu Primary Healthcare Centre, the construction of additional Trunk C roads, the establishment of a mini fire station and the expansion of financial support programmes for small businesses and artisans.
