The Bayelsa State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the death of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Stanley Okebaram, whose tragic demise in Nembe Local Government Area has sparked widespread concern and calls for justice.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, who confirmed the development on Wednesday, stated that detectives had already launched an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the corps member’s death.

According to him, the findings of the investigation will be made public as soon as it is concluded.

Meanwhile, the Acting President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Bayelsa State, Chief Chinedu Arthur Ugwa, has appealed to members of the Igbo community in the state to remain calm and suspend plans for a protest pending the outcome of the police investigation.

The deceased, Stanley Okebaram, an indigene of Isi Orodo Autonomous Community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, was serving with the NYSC in Nembe-Bassambiri, Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, before he reportedly died on Sunday under circumstances that are yet to be officially established.

His death, coupled with allegations circulating on social media that he was killed and his body dumped in a creek, triggered outrage among members of the Igbo community in Bayelsa, who had planned a protest to demand justice.

However, Chief Ugwa urged restraint, revealing that the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State, CP Daniel Edebor Iyamah, had assured him that a thorough investigation was underway to determine the actual cause of the corps member’s death.

He added that he had also directed the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Nembe to independently gather facts surrounding the incident.

“We appeal to our people to remain peaceful and allow the police to complete their investigation. If the truth confirms any wrongdoing, appropriate steps will be taken, and the next line of action will be communicated to Igbos in Bayelsa State,” Ugwa said.

He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC in Bayelsa State, and the entire Igbo community over the tragic loss.

According to information, before his deployment for the mandatory national service, Okebaram was a prominent student leader who served as the Student Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering.

The 27-year-old was widely admired for his leadership qualities and commitment to service, making news of his death all the more devastating to colleagues, friends and members of the public.

The Bayelsa State Police Command has urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while investigations continue.
