THE Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has intensified efforts to strengthen aviation safety, security and human capacity development through renewed engagement with maintenance professionals, enhanced aviation security oversight and staff welfare initiatives under the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo.

As part of the authority’s drive to deepen collaboration with key industry stakeholders, Capt. Najomo received the Executive Committee of the Society of Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers of Nigeria (SLAMEN), led by its president, Engineer Mubarak Haladu, on a visit at the NCAA Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the regulator and the professional body on strategic issues critical to the sustainable development of Nigeria’s aircraft maintenance sub-sector and the aviation industry.

Capt. Najomo urged the association to continue supporting capacity development, technical knowledge sharing, mentorship and the promotion of a strong safety culture among aircraft maintenance engineers, describing these as essential pillars for sustaining safe flight operations.

In recognition of his contributions to the growth and development of the aviation sector since assuming office, the SLAMEN leadership presented a plaque to the DGCA.

SLAMEN is the umbrella professional body representing Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in Nigeria.

In a separate event, Capt. Najomo also empowered more than 20 members of the NCAA Muslim Ummah through a programme, held at the authority’s headquarters in Abuja.

The beneficiaries included security personnel, cleaners, and other selected individuals from within and outside the authority, while support was also extended to the families of two deceased beneficiaries.

Items distributed included sewing machines, deep freezers, barbing equipment, Point-of-Sale (POS) machines and laptops aimed at promoting self-reliance and improving livelihoods.

Speaking at the event, the director general urged members of the Muslim Ummah to continue praying for the safety, growth and progress of the NCAA and the aviation industry, reaffirming management’s commitment to expanding welfare and empowerment programmes for the less privileged.

Meanwhile, the authority, through its Directorate of Aviation Security Regulations (DAVSEC), also convened its 2026 Aviation Security Strategic Meeting in Abuja to strengthen the aviation security oversight framework.

The four-day meeting brought together management and technical personnel to review aviation security oversight activities, assess implementation of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Universal Security Audit Programme Continuous Monitoring Approach (USAP-CMA) Corrective Action Plans, evaluate departmental performance and enhance the Directorate’s regulatory effectiveness.

Director of Aviation Security Regulation, Dr. Bernard Omogo, described the meeting as a strategic platform for assessing progress, addressing emerging security challenges and improving aviation security oversight in line with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).

He said the implementation of Quality Management Systems (QMS), the review of oversight tools and harmonisation of operational procedures would further strengthen the Directorate’s regulatory responsibilities.

The meeting featured presentations on Quality Management Systems in aviation security operations, updates on ICAO USAP-CMA corrective action plans, reports from the Directorate, as well as deliberations on legal and administrative enforcement procedures, regional office operations, report writing and the categorisation of audits and inspections.

Participants also conducted practical sessions on harmonising oversight tools, audit procedures, inspection checklists and guidance materials, while considering proposed amendments to Nigeria’s national aviation security documents.
