The University of Lagos has celebrated one of its students, Peter A. Fagbola, after he emerged as a winner at the Huawei Global ICT Competition held in Shenzhen, China.
Fagbola, a student of the Department of Systems Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and a member of the ABS-CITS Huawei Academy, was part of Team Nigeria Cloud, which clinched first prize at the global competition and received a cash prize of N3.5million.
The competition, regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious technology contests, attracted thousands of university students from across the globe.
According to a statement by the university on Friday, Fagbola’s journey to the global stage began when he emerged as the overall winner in the Cloud and AI Track at the national competition while representing UNILAG.

He later advanced to the Southern Africa Regional Competition, where he and his teammates secured first prize, earning Nigeria’s ticket to the global finals in Shenzhen, China.
At the global competition, Team Nigeria Cloud outperformed teams from different countries to emerge champions, winning the top prize and a N3.5 million cash reward.

Reacting to the achievement, UNILAG said the feat reflected Fagbola’s dedication and the quality of mentorship and training available at the institution.
“Mr. Fagbola’s success reflects not only his exceptional talent and dedication but also the quality of mentorship and training provided by UNILAG. His achievement is a testament to the University’s commitment to nurturing innovators who can compete and win at the highest levels,” the statement read.
The university added that following the victory, Fagbola was invited to the Huawei Education Summit in Abuja, where he and other awardees were formally honoured.

It said the achievement should inspire other students to strive for excellence in national and international competitions.
“Mr. Fagbola’s feat is more than a trophy; it is a beacon of inspiration for other students to strive for excellence in both national and international competitions. His story embodies the values of self-discovery, perseverance, and global competitiveness that UNILAG champions,” the statement added.
Congratulating the student, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, praised the achievement on behalf of the university community and wished him greater success in his future endeavours.
