Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has called on Nigerian football fans to continue supporting the Super Falcons despite their disappointing defeat to WAFCON debutants Malawi, insisting the team deserves encouragement rather than criticism.
The ten-time African champions suffered a surprise loss that sparked criticism from supporters, but Sodje believes the focus should remain on helping the players regain confidence as the tournament progresses.
He urged fans not to judge the team solely on one result, stressing that setbacks are part of football.
“Losing to Malawi, who are debutants, should not be something we as fans should criticize for now. Instead, we should cheer them up to play better and carry on in the tournament,” Sodje told Brila.net.

According to him, the reaction to defeat can often determine how a team responds in subsequent matches.
“Football depends on how we respond and players tend to play better under pressure.”
Sodje also appealed for patience from supporters, arguing that criticism at this stage of the competition could prove counterproductive as the Super Falcons look to revive their campaign.
“We are in a competition, so all the criticism should be left behind. The players know they have to bounce back and I’m sure they will bounce back.”

The former international expressed confidence in the quality and experience within the Nigerian squad, backing the players to respond positively when they return to action.

Nigeria remains one of the most successful teams in African women’s football, and Sodje believes the Super Falcons have the character to overcome their early disappointment and rediscover the form that has made them continental giants.
With the tournament still in its early stages, the former defender maintained that unity between the players and supporters could play a crucial role in helping the team recover and achieve its objectives.
