Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, the Sardauna of Sokoto, describing him as an accomplished public servant, elder statesman and patriot whose life was devoted to the service and development of Nigeria.
In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Babangida extended his sympathies to the family of the late statesman, the Sultan of Sokoto and the Sokoto State Government over the loss.
He said Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji distinguished himself through exemplary leadership, selfless service and unwavering commitment to national development throughout his career.
According to the former Head of State, the late Sardauna’s immense contributions to Nigeria and his dedication to every national assignment set a standard for diligence, integrity and forthrightness.
Babangida described the deceased as a close friend, associate, confidant and brother, saying his passing was a deeply personal loss.
“To me, this is a personal loss as I have lost a friend, an associate, a confidant and a brother, and all I can hold on to are fond memories of the relationship we had, which was built on trust, mutual respect and a shared vision for Nigeria,” he said.
He prayed for Allah to grant the immediate family of the deceased, the people of Sokoto State and all Nigerians the strength to bear the loss.
Babangida also prayed for the repose of the late statesman’s soul, asking Allah to grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.
