Zoomlion Nigeria Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government’s drive to modernise waste management infrastructure through strategic investments aimed at strengthening waste transfer, resource recovery and environmentally sustainable waste management across Lagos State.

The company recently completed a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) intervention at the Olusosun Waste Disposal Facility involving the rehabilitation of approximately 1.2 kilometres of the access road and the construction of reinforced waste tipping platforms, addressing operational challenges that had hindered the efficient movement and discharge of waste trucks at the facility.

Undertaken in partnership with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the intervention was designed to improve operational efficiency at the disposal facility while complementing the broader Lagos Waste Management Improvement Project, under which Zoomlion Nigeria is developing modern waste transfer and resource recovery infrastructure across the state.

Completed within 26 days, the intervention removed a major bottleneck affecting waste evacuation operations at the Olusosun Disposal Facility. Prior to the rehabilitation works, the deteriorated access road had resulted in prolonged truck queues, delayed waste evacuation, increased fuel consumption, frequent vehicle breakdowns and higher operating costs for Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and waste haulage contractors.

The rehabilitated access road and reinforced tipping platforms are expected to significantly improve truck turnaround time, ease congestion within the facility, enhance fleet productivity and improve the overall efficiency of waste evacuation operations.

Commending the intervention, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, praised Zoomlion Nigeria for responding promptly to the Authority’s request for support.

“We recognised the urgent need to improve access within this critical section of the Olusosun facility, reached out to Zoomlion Nigeria and they responded immediately. Their intervention will significantly improve operations and we appreciate their commitment to supporting Lagos State.”

The intervention also received widespread commendation from key stakeholders in the waste management sector.

The National President of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN), Dr. Olugbenga Adebola, described the intervention as a commendable demonstration of corporate responsibility, particularly as it was fully funded by Zoomlion Nigeria as a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

“We cannot overemphasise the need for prompt access to the disposal site. Kudos to Zoomlion Nigeria, we appreciate this intervention. More importantly, this was undertaken purely as a CSR initiative, meaning that not a single dime was spent by Lagos State or the PSP operators. That is truly commendable.”

Similarly, the Secretary of the Waste Managers Association of Nigeria (WAMASON), Yusuf Adelodun, who represented the association’s President at the commissioning, praised the quality and speed of execution of the project.

“I was amazed when I arrived here. No one would have believed this could be achieved within just 26 days. When we first heard about the project, many of us were sceptical. Today, Zoomlion Nigeria has delivered, and we can all see the results. It is real – it is not AI.”

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Managing Director of Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Habiba Abubakar, said the intervention reflects the company’s commitment to delivering practical solutions that create immediate impact while supporting Lagos State’s long-term waste management objectives.

Mrs. Abubakar further stated that Zoomlion Nigeria remains committed to Nigeria’s development through sustainable environmental investments.

Mrs. Abubakar credited the successful delivery of the intervention to the support of the company’s leadership and the dedication of the project team.

“We challenged ourselves to complete the project within 21 days. Although unforeseen circumstances required a short extension, our team remained resolute, and together we successfully delivered the project in 26 days. I sincerely appreciate the unwavering support of the Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, whose leadership continues to inspire our commitment to excellence.

“I also commend our team of engineers, led by Francis Akoto,and every member of the Zoomlion Nigeria team who worked tirelessly to deliver this project. That determination and teamwork reflect the culture of excellence that defines Zoomlion Nigeria.”

The company added that the CSR intervention complements its ongoing implementation of the Lagos Waste Management Improvement Project, which includes the development of two Transfer Loading Stations (TLSs) at Olusosun and Solous III that will each collect approximately 2,500 metric tonnes of waste daily upon completion, as well as two Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).

Upon completion, these facilities will modernise waste transfer operations, improve resource recovery, reduce dependence on landfill disposal and support Lagos State’s transition towards a more sustainable and circular waste management system.
