Nearly nine years after a chance encounter in a luxury fashion store changed their lives forever, football icon Cristiano Ronaldo and his long-time partner, Georgina Rodríguez, are reportedly set to exchange marital vows in a lavish ceremony on the Portuguese island of Madeira.

According to reports published by British newspaper The Sun and other international media outlets, the couple will tie the knot next Saturday in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, where Ronaldo spent his childhood before rising to become one of the greatest footballers in history. Blueprint reports

If confirmed, the wedding will mark the beginning of a new chapter for one of the world’s most celebrated celebrity couples, whose relationship has attracted global attention since they first met in 2016.

Wedding reportedly fixed for Funchal Cathedral

Reports indicate that the historic Funchal Cathedral has been reserved for the ceremony, which is expected to begin at about 3 p.m.

The reception is also reportedly scheduled to take place at a luxury hotel located close to the cathedral.

According to the reports, hotel guests have already been informed that two floors of the facility, along with several bar areas, will be unavailable on Friday and Saturday because of a private event believed to be linked to the wedding.

Neither Ronaldo nor Georgina has officially confirmed the venue or the wedding date.

Love story that began in Madrid

Ronaldo and Georgina first met in 2016 when she was working as a sales assistant at a Gucci boutique in Madrid.

Their relationship quickly blossomed despite the enormous public attention surrounding the Portuguese superstar.

Over the years, Georgina has become one of football’s most recognised partners, frequently appearing alongside Ronaldo at award ceremonies, football events and family occasions.

Last August, Ronaldo proposed to the Spanish-Argentine model, bringing years of speculation about marriage to an end.

The engagement was celebrated by millions of fans across the world.

World Cup delayed wedding plans

Ronaldo had previously disclosed that he and Georgina intended to marry after the FIFA World Cup.

Portugal, however, saw their campaign come to an end after losing to eventual champions Spain, paving the way for what many believe will now be the long-awaited wedding.

The Al Nassr forward has openly described Georgina as the woman with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life.

The football legend has repeatedly spoken about the stability and happiness she has brought to his family since they began their relationship.

Diamond rings fuel speculation

Speculation surrounding the wedding intensified last week after the couple were photographed boarding a luxury yacht during a holiday in Mallorca.

Photographs published by international media showed both Ronaldo and Georgina wearing diamond rings, further fuelling reports that preparations for the ceremony were already at an advanced stage.

Although neither has publicly commented on the images, fans quickly interpreted them as another indication that the wedding was imminent.

From humble beginnings to global fame

Ronaldo’s return to Madeira for what is expected to be his wedding carries deep emotional significance.

Born in Funchal, he left the island as an 11-year-old boy to pursue his football dream at Sporting Lisbon’s academy.

From those humble beginnings, he went on to become one of football’s greatest players, winning league titles in England, Spain and Italy with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus before joining Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.

His glittering career includes five Ballon d’Or awards, multiple UEFA Champions League titles, the UEFA European Championship and the UEFA Nations League with Portugal, as well as numerous individual scoring records.

A family that has inspired millions

Beyond football, Ronaldo and Georgina have built a family admired by millions across the globe.

Together they are raising five children, with Georgina playing a central role in caring for Ronaldo’s eldest son, Cristiano Jr., as well as twins Eva and Mateo.

The couple also share daughters Alana Martina and Bella Esmeralda.

Their journey has not been without heartbreak.

In 2022, they announced the death of their newborn son during childbirth, a tragedy that drew sympathy from football clubs, teammates and fans around the world.

The couple later described the loss as the most painful experience they had endured as parents.

Fans await official confirmation

Despite widespread reports about the wedding, Ronaldo and Georgina have yet to issue an official statement confirming the ceremony.

Until then, details surrounding the venue, guest list and other arrangements remain based on media reports.

Nevertheless, anticipation continues to grow among football supporters and celebrity watchers worldwide, who are eagerly waiting to see whether one of sport’s most enduring love stories will culminate in a fairytale wedding in the city where Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable journey first began.
