Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Sunday visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, alongside former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
The meeting comes amid increasing political consultations and strategic engagements ahead of the 2027 general election, as key political figures continue to hold discussions on the country’s future.
Makinde disclosed the visit in a post on his verified X account, where he shared photographs of the meeting and described the discussions as timely and significant.
Meeting focused on national issues
According to the Oyo State governor, the meeting with the former president centred on critical national issues ahead of the next general election.
Makinde said the delegation sought Obasanjo’s views on matters affecting the country and appreciated the elder statesman for offering valuable guidance.
“Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, in Abeokuta. Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election,” the governor wrote.
He added that the delegation was grateful for Obasanjo’s wisdom and counsel at what he described as a crucial period in Nigeria’s political journey.
Political consultations gather momentum
The visit comes as political activities continue to intensify across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
Leading politicians from different parties have stepped up consultations, alliances and strategic meetings as preparations for the polls gather pace.
It is believed that such engagements could shape future political alignments and influence decisions on party strategies, coalitions and possible presidential ambitions.
Although details of Sunday’s meeting were not made public beyond Makinde’s statement, the presence of prominent political figures has generated interest within political circles.
Obasanjo remains influential voice
Despite leaving office in 2007, former President Obasanjo remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures.
The former military head of state and civilian president is frequently consulted by serving and former public office holders on matters relating to governance, national unity and democratic development.
His opinions often attract national attention, particularly during election periods when political leaders seek his counsel and support.
Over the years, Obasanjo has continued to play the role of an elder statesman, speaking on national issues and advocating reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Photos shared after meeting
Photographs released by Governor Makinde showed the three political leaders meeting with Obasanjo at his Abeokuta residence.
Some of the images also captured the governor participating in a traditional local game during the visit, reflecting the relaxed atmosphere that accompanied the discussions.
The meeting has since attracted reactions on social media, with many Nigerians interpreting it as part of the growing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.
As political activities continue to gather momentum, more meetings involving key stakeholders are expected in the coming months as parties and political leaders position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
