The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on nursing mothers across the country to prioritize healthy lifestyles and balanced nutrition to ensure the optimal growth and well-being of their children.
In a press statement released in commemoration of the annual World Breastfeeding Week 2026 which is celebrated globally from August 1st to 7th, the First Lady expressed Nigeria’s full alignment with the 2026 international theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”
Senator Tinubu emphasized that optimal breastfeeding practices serve as the bedrock of early childhood health, laying an indispensable foundation for lifelong physical and cognitive development.

“Breastfeeding lays the foundation for a child’s healthy growth and lifelong development, making it a vital investment in families and a nation,” the First Lady noted.
Highlighting the link between maternal health and child welfare, she urged mothers, particularly those currently lactating to maintain balanced diets and healthy habits to support both their own physical well-being and their children’s development.
“I encourage mothers, especially lactating mothers, to embrace healthy lifestyles and eat nutritious foods for their well-being and that of their children,” she added.
World Breastfeeding Week is commemorated annually across more than 120 countries to raise awareness about the benefits of exclusive and continuous breastfeeding, advocate for supportive workplace and community policies, and promote health standards globally.
