ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent call on state governors to stop constructing unnecessary flyovers in locations without traffic congestion.

 President Tinubu recently noted this when he received a delegation of traditional rulers from Oyo state, led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who came to congratulate him on the successful rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oriire local government in Oyo state.

The country director of ActionAid, Dr Andrew Mamedu, in a statement Sunday in Abuja, said the president’s remarks presented an opportunity for a broader national conversation about public finance which goes beyond flyovers to address how governments at all levels allocate scarce public resources.

He said while infrastructure remained essential for development, the real challenge was not for flyovers but a pattern of public expenditure that often prioritises prestige over people.

He said at a time when millions of Nigerians were making extraordinary sacrifices amid economic hardship, every naira of public money should deliver measurable value to citizens.

Mamedu called on governments at all levels to review expenditures that delivered little public benefit, including unnecessary prestige projects, luxury acquisitions, oversized government delegations, excessive official travel, and discretionary spending lacking adequate transparency and accountability.
