In a major breakthrough against violent criminality in the South-East, military personnel operating under Operation UDO KA have uncovered a shallow grave in Imo State and exhumed the remains of a slain community leader, Chief Ibe Anyadu.

The operation, executed on Sunday, August 2, by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade under Operation EASTERN SANITY II, took place deep inside the Umudike Forest, a known hideout and camp for criminal gangs in the region.

In an official statement released on Monday, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, confirmed the operation.

According to the statement, the recovery of Chief Anyadu’s body followed a series of intelligence-driven operations.

Security forces recently apprehended members of a notorious gang implicated in a string of violent crimes across the South-East, including the murder of a Nigerian Army soldier and the theft of service weapons.

During sustained interrogation, one of the detained suspects confessed to participating in the murder of Chief Anyadu, a revered leader of the Aggah Community.

The suspect subsequently volunteered to lead security forces to the shallow grave where the gang had buried the victim.

On Sunday, troops guided by the suspect penetrated the Umudike Forest, located within the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, where the body was successfully located and exhumed.

The exercise was conducted in the presence of representatives from the deceased’s immediate family, local vigilante personnel from Ohaji/Egbema LGA, and delegations from both the Aggah and Umudike communities.

To ensure the late community leader receives a proper farewell in line with local traditions, the family provided an ambulance and a coffin at the site to convey the body home for final burial rites.
