The Bauchi State Government has intensified proactive measures to reduce the impact of anticipated flooding across the state, with authorities identifying 1,862 communities, 145 schools, 101 primary healthcare facilities and eight markets as vulnerable during the 2026 rainy season.

The renewed commitment was reaffirmed at a stakeholders’ engagement on the 2026 Flood Preparedness and Response Framework held on Tuesday in Bauchi, where government officials, development partners, traditional rulers, religious leaders and the media reviewed strategies aimed at protecting lives, livelihoods and public infrastructure.

Speaking at the meeting, the State Coordinator of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), Dr. Ibrahim Kabir, said the engagement was part of the Bala Mohammed administration’s proactive approach to disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.

He explained that the government had developed a comprehensive response framework focused on strengthening community preparedness, improving early warning systems and ensuring coordinated action among relevant ministries, departments and agencies.

According to him, the administration is prioritising public awareness and community mobilisation to ensure residents in flood-prone areas receive timely information that will enable them to take preventive measures before flooding occurs.

Dr. Kabir said the government would work closely with traditional institutions, religious leaders, media organisations and community-based groups to extend flood safety messages to every affected community across the state’s 20 local government areas.

He noted that the stakeholder engagement also reviewed lessons from previous flood incidents and assessed ongoing interventions designed to minimise the humanitarian and economic consequences of flooding.

The ACReSAL Coordinator recalled that earlier awareness campaigns effectively utilised mosques, churches, Friday sermons and Sunday services to educate residents on flood safety, adding that the strategy would be expanded ahead of the peak of the rainy season.

Participants at the meeting pledged continued support for the state government’s flood mitigation efforts, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening early warning dissemination, community resilience and coordinated emergency response to safeguard lives and property across Bauchi State.
