The Nigeria Customs Service has appointed Abdulquadri Jaiyeola as alternate captain of its men’s volleyball team ahead of the second phase of the 2026 Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League, PUNCH sports extra reports.
The appointment was contained in a statement signed by the service’s Head of Sports, Samuel Onikeku, on Monday.
Onikeku said Jaiyeola’s experience and leadership qualities at both national and club levels earned him the new role.
“Abdulquadri Jaiyeola has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership both at the national and club levels.
“His experience and dedication make him a worthy addition to the team’s leadership structure as alternate captain,” Onikeku said.
Jaiyeola recently captained Nigeria’s senior men’s volleyball side to qualification for the African Nations Championship qualifiers in Abidjan.
The outside hitter, who plays for Al-Wasl SC in Dubai, rose to prominence with Offa Volleyball Club before representing Nigeria at youth and U-21 levels.
He also has previous experience with the Customs team, having represented the side at the 2021 African Men’s Club Championship in Tunisia.
Philip Akande will continue as captain, while Chris Udah retains his position as first assistant captain and Princewill Okoi as second assistant captain.
Onikeku also commended the players for their performance in the first phase of the league and urged them to build on their showing as they enter the decisive stage of the competition.
“Our men’s team displayed a high level of professionalism, discipline and commitment throughout the first phase of the league,” he said.
“I urge the players to improve on that performance and remain focused as we head into the final phase of the competition. We must continue to complement our efforts with hard work, teamwork and consistency if we are to achieve our objectives”.
