President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria on its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, praising the athletes for winning 24 medals and describing their achievement as a reflection of the resilience and excellence of the Nigerian spirit.

Nigeria finished the Games with a total haul of 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze, placing the country among the top-performing nations at the multi-sport event.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the athletes for representing the country with distinction and bringing pride to Nigerians through their performances.

The statement partly read, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulates Team Nigeria on their remarkable performance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

“The President celebrates the athletes for demonstrating the resilience, determination, discipline, and excellence that define the Nigerian spirit.

“President Tinubu commends Team Nigeria for flying the country’s flag with dignity and pride, affirming that the 24 medals won—10 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze—are a testament to their hard work and perseverance.”

The President noted that beyond the medals, the experience gained by the athletes would serve as a springboard for greater success in future international competitions while inspiring young Nigerians to embrace discipline, commitment and patriotism.

“The President notes that the experience gained by every athlete will serve as a strong foundation for greater accomplishments in future international competitions and inspire many young Nigerians to embrace the values of commitment and national service,” the statement added.

Tinubu also commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their efforts in developing sports and supporting Nigerian athletes. He urged the athletes not to relent in their pursuit of excellence.

“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible.

“My administration remains steadfast in its resolve to invest in sports development, strengthen our sporting institutions, improve training facilities, and create greater opportunities for our talented athletes to excel on the continental and global stage,” the President stated.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games brought together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in several sporting events, with Team Nigeria delivering strong performances in disciplines including athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, boxing and para-sports.

Nigeria’s medal haul continues the country’s tradition of strong outings at the Commonwealth Games, where it has consistently ranked among Africa’s leading sporting nations.

The latest performance is expected to further boost preparations for upcoming continental and global competitions, including the 2027 African Games and qualification events for future Olympic competitions.
