The United Kingdom has announced the commencement of applications for the 2026/2027 Chevening Scholarships, with interested candidates able to submit their entries from Tuesday, August 4, until October 6, 2026.

The Chevening Scholarship programme, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, offers fully funded one-year master’s degree programmes at universities across the United Kingdom.

Established in 1983, the scholarship is designed for emerging leaders with the potential to drive positive change in their countries and contribute to addressing global challenges.

In a statement on Monday, Head of the Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Emma Hennessey, encouraged eligible applicants to take advantage of the opportunity.

“Chevening is looking for exceptional individuals who are ready to collaborate with the UK to help build a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable future,” she said.

Hennessey said the programme remained committed to promoting diversity and inclusion by encouraging applications from under-represented groups.

“We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive cohort of global future leaders, so we are particularly interested in receiving applications from under-represented groups,” she said.

According to her, successful applicants are selected not only for their academic and professional achievements but also for their leadership potential and commitment to making a lasting impact.

“Scholars and fellows are chosen not only for their achievements, but for their leadership potential and commitment to creating lasting impact,” she added.

She noted that the scholarship provides recipients with access to quality education, professional networks and international experiences that equip them to tackle shared global challenges.

“Chevening equips future leaders with the tools and connections needed to address shared international challenges together,” Hennessey said.

She also advised prospective applicants to reflect on how their ambitions align with the scholarship’s vision before applying.

British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, described Chevening as more than an academic scholarship, saying it offers participants lifelong connections with a global community of leaders.

“Through a world-class education, exposure to UK values and culture, and lifelong connections, scholars gain knowledge, skills and networks,” Baxter said.

He added that the experience enables scholars to address pressing challenges and promote sustainable development in their communities and countries.

“If you have a clear vision for making a meaningful impact in areas of shared priority between Nigeria and the UK, apply,” he said.

Prospective applicants can submit their applications through the official Chevening application portal and review the programme’s guidance to strengthen their submissions.
