The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Taofeek Adegoke, drew attention on Tuesday after a video of him distributing boiled corn to supporters by the roadside went viral.

In the footage, Adegoke was seen standing beside a steaming pot of corn, personally handing it out to eager supporters who crowded around him. Many hailed him as “Mr Governor” while chanting slogans in his favour. Some insisted on receiving the corn directly from his hands, describing the gesture as a blessing.

The video quickly spread across social media, where reactions were divided. Supporters praised Adegoke’s humility and accessibility, while critics dismissed the act as a familiar campaign tactic aimed at projecting closeness to ordinary citizens.

Public displays of simplicity have long been part of Nigerian electioneering. Politicians across party lines are often seen eating at roadside food stalls, riding motorcycles, visiting markets, or joining community events to reinforce their connection with voters.

Online reactions reflected this divide. One TikTok user, Sam Oladayo, described Adegoke as “a very humble governor,” while another, Finiyi Samuel, argued that “those people following him know he cannot win the election, yet they will still follow him and collect his money.” Others labelled the gesture “an old school tactic” and “old style of fooling people,” though some, like Afolayan Femi, maintained that beyond politics, Adegoke is “a good person.”
