Sheila Kirkland 42 has been charged with aggravated battery after allegedly stabbing a 59-year-old man she knew during a fight on the 700 block of South California Avenue in East Garfield Park late Sunday night. The victim walked several blocks to a nearby gas station where paramedics transported him to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition. Kirkland was taken into custody at the scene. A detention hearing is scheduled for August 4 at Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

A 42-year-old woman was arrested and charged with aggravated battery after allegedly stabbing a man she knew during a fight on a West Side street late Sunday night leaving him to walk several blocks to a gas station for help according to Chicago Police.

At approximately 11:35 p.m. on August 2 a 59-year-old man was involved in a verbal and physical altercation with a woman he knew in the 700 block of South California Avenue near Flournoy Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood according to Chicago Police and published reports.

During the fight the man suffered multiple lacerations to his body.

The victim made his way several blocks north on California Avenue to a nearby gas station where paramedics responded and transported him to Mount Sinai Hospital.

He was listed in fair condition at the time of the incident.

Sheila Kirkland 42 of the 700 block of South California Avenue was arrested at approximately 11:27 p.m. on August 2 at the scene by Chicago Police officers according to CPD.

She was identified as the person who stabbed the victim minutes earlier.

The Charge

Kirkland faces one felony count of aggravated battery by use of a deadly weapon in connection with the stabbing.

A detention hearing for Kirkland is scheduled for August 4 2026 at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 2600 South California Avenue.

The 700 block of South California Avenue sits in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood within the 11th District on the West Side near Flournoy Street.
