Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a new salary structure for personnel of the Armed Forces, describing the move as a landmark investment in national security and the welfare of troops.

Buratai, in a statement issued to journalists in Kaduna on Wednesday, said the salary increase reflects the President’s appreciation of the sacrifices made daily by military personnel in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

He described the review, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, as a well-deserved reward for the dedication, resilience and patriotism of officers and soldiers serving across various theatres of operation.

According to him, the structured increase of 30 per cent for senior officers, 50 per cent for mid-level officers and 80 per cent for junior personnel demonstrates strategic leadership and an understanding of the realities faced by members of the Armed Forces.

Buratai particularly applauded the decision to grant the highest increase to junior personnel, noting that they constitute the bulk of frontline troops confronting banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats.

“The decision to prioritise junior personnel is commendable because they bear the greatest burden in the nation’s security operations. This will undoubtedly boost their morale and strengthen their commitment to duty,” he said.

The former Army Chief said the new salary package would positively impact the welfare of the approximately 250,000 personnel of the Armed Forces and further motivate them to defend the country with renewed dedication.
