For many Nigerian university students, learning often extends beyond the lecture hall. Large classes, limited access to lecturers and the high cost of private tutoring mean that understanding difficult concepts frequently depends on personal study or help from classmates.

Increasingly, however, students are turning to artificial intelligence-powered education platforms for academic support, signalling a shift in how learning takes place on campuses.

One such platform, Florence, has gained traction among students by providing curriculum-based academic assistance through chat applications such as Telegram and WhatsApp. Rather than relying on advertising campaigns, the platform has spread largely through recommendations among students seeking help with coursework, assignments and examination preparation.

The growing use of digital learning tools reflects changing study habits among university students, many of whom now expect instant access to explanations and learning support outside the classroom.

According to the developers, the platform has responded to more than 100,000 academic questions from students across Nigerian universities since its launch.

Students who use the platform say it has become part of their study routine.

Tola, an engineering student at the University of Lagos, said the platform helped simplify difficult concepts. “It breaks down thermodynamics better than lectures,” the student said.

For Seun, a Business Administration student, the appeal lies in reducing the isolation that often comes with studying. “There’s no more reading alone until midnight,” the student said.

Chidera, a psychology student, described the platform as “having a personal tutor.”

The adoption of AI-powered learning assistants comes as education technology companies seek to complement, rather than replace, classroom teaching by providing students with round-the-clock academic support.

Education experts have long argued that Nigeria’s overcrowded lecture halls and high student-to-lecturer ratios make personalised learning difficult, creating opportunities for technology-driven solutions that provide additional academic support.

The growing interest in the software has also attracted academic attention. The University of Lagos has approved a 12-month ethics-reviewed research pilot to evaluate the platform’s impact on student engagement, learning outcomes and classroom support.

The study is expected to provide data on how students interact with AI-powered learning assistants and whether such platforms improve learning outcomes in higher education.

As artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into education, technology is reshaping learning beyond the classroom, offering students an additional source of support in a higher education system where access to one-on-one academic guidance remains limited.
