Uganda is mourning the death of footballer David Owori, the captain of SC Villa, who was killed after being attacked by suspected robbers near his home in Kampala.

The 27 year old defender and midfielder was attacked on Tuesday night in the Makindye area as he was returning home. Witnesses said a group of suspected robbers hit him with paving stones, stole his belongings and fled.

Owori was first taken to a nearby medical centre before being transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he later died from his injuries.

SC Villa confirmed his death, describing him as more than just a player.

“We have lost more than a player. We have lost a leader, a brother and a friend,” the club said in a statement.

Club spokesperson Asan Kasingye said Owori was attacked just a short distance from his home.

“He was ambushed by thugs as he approached his residence and suffered life threatening injuries before being taken to hospital,” Kasingye said.

Police have launched an investigation into the attack. Kampala police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said officers had secured the crime scene and were collecting evidence to identify those responsible.

Owori, popularly known as “Colgate,” was one of Uganda’s best known footballers. He played for SC Villa and also represented the Uganda national team, the Cranes.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations paid tribute to him, describing him as a leader and an inspiration to many young footballers.

The Uganda national team also expressed sadness over his death, saying the country had lost a talented player who proudly represented the nation.

Owori returned to SC Villa in 2023 after playing in Europe. He helped the club win the Uganda Premier League title in 2024, ending a 20 year wait for the championship. His impressive performances earned him a contract extension until 2027.

His death has sparked public anger and renewed calls for stronger action against violent crime in Kampala. Fans, teammates and political leaders have all demanded justice for the late football captain.
