The Osun State Police Command has brokered a peace agreement between the Accord Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the scheduling of their final governorship campaign rallies, averting what could have resulted in a clash between supporters of the two political parties ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The agreement was reached on Friday during a strategic meeting convened by the Commissioner of Police (Elections), CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, to address the conflict arising from the dates and venues earlier proposed by the two parties for their grand finale campaigns.

According to the Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, in a press statement, the meeting formed part of proactive measures to sustain peace and guarantee a credible, peaceful and violence-free electoral process in Osun State.

At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to adjust their schedules, with the Accord Party fixing its final campaign rally for Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Fakunle, while the APC will hold its grand finale on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Freedom Park.

The police said the resolution was reached through dialogue and mutual understanding, noting that the arrangement would help prevent any breakdown of law and order or confrontation between supporters of the rival political parties.

CP Etaifo commended the leadership of the Accord Party and the APC for what he described as their maturity, patriotism and commitment to democratic values by embracing peaceful dialogue instead of conflict.

He also urged political leaders to caution their supporters, loyalists and campaign teams against acts capable of disrupting public peace before, during and after the campaigns.

The commissioner reiterated the neutrality of the Nigeria Police Force, assuring all political parties of adequate security during lawful political activities while warning that the command would deal decisively with anyone involved in violence, thuggery, intimidation, incitement or any act capable of causing a breach of the peace.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains neutral and committed to providing adequate security for all lawful political activities. However, anyone found engaging in violence, intimidation, thuggery, incitement or any act capable of causing a breach of the peace will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he said.

The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security throughout the electioneering period and appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.

The latest intervention by the police comes amid heightened political activities in Osun State as parties intensify campaigns ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
