…As NLC Commences Negotiations for Worker Salary Increase Wage

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has said that he was the first Governor to implement a N75,000 minimum wage in the country, with assurance to do the same whenever the Federal Government approves a new minimum wage.

Governor Idris, who started this at a Rights of Workers Summit held in Birnin Kebbi, said the gesture became necessary following the expiration of the current 70,000 naira minimum wage status last July.

The Governor stressed that he would champion the case at the Governors Forum whenever the issue comes up for discussion, adding that the role of civil servants in nation building remained an issue for commendation and compensation.

He disclosed that his administration has spent over ₦16 billion on retirement and death benefits since assuming office in May 2023.

Speaking earlier, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, said the Union has begun preparations to enter into discussions with the Federal and State Governments for an upward review of workers’ salaries across the country.

Represented by the Deputy President, Audu Titus Amba, said that any minimum wage below 500,000 naira would not cater for the needs of workers due to the current situation of socioeconomic hardships facing civil servants in the country.

The President, however, stressed that NLC was not in confrontation with the Executive arm of government but rather presenting the plights of workers and the soaring cost of living, expressing hopes that their requests would be looked into.
