A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Austin Okai, has said the successful rescue of abducted residents of Woro community in Kwara State reflects effective coordination among Nigeria’s security agencies.
The victims were abducted during an attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State and recently arrived in Ilorin after spending months in captivity.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, Okai attributed the success of the operation to intelligence-led policing and collaboration among security agencies.
Okai also commended the military leadership, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Oluwatosin Ajayi, the and local vigilantes for their roles in securing the victims’ release.
“The successful rescue of the Woro abductees reflects effective intelligence gathering, seamless information sharing and operational coordination among security agencies and local assets,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to support the country’s security agencies by providing timely information, warning against the politicisation of security matters.
“We must avoid politicising national security. Citizens should actively collaborate with security personnel in the collective interest of the nation,” Okai said.
The ADC chieftain also commended the DSS leadership for what he described as its commitment to internal discipline following the arraignment of a retired DSS officer, Ihechimere Ezeakolam.
According to him, the agency’s action demonstrates the importance of accountability within the nation’s security institutions.
“The prosecution is a necessary step toward maintaining integrity within the nation’s security architecture,” he said.
Okai called on the Nigerian military and the police to strengthen internal accountability mechanisms to enhance transparency and improve operational effectiveness in the fight against banditry and insurgency.
“The military and police authorities should adopt similar internal scrutiny mechanisms to bolster transparency and operational efficiency in the ongoing campaign against banditry and insurgency across the country,” he said.
He added that enforcing strict standards of accountability across security agencies would strengthen institutional credibility and serve as a model for personnel within the country’s security architecture.
Ezeakolam was recently remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre by Justice Muhammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja after being arraigned on charges relating to alleged support for, and involvement with, the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.
