The Lagos State Government has arrested 27 suspected hoodlums for allegedly vandalising the newly constructed bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija along the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development on Friday, saying the arrests followed a joint midnight enforcement operation carried out by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force.

According to Wahab, the operation was conducted in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive to rid the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway of illegal activities, including environmental pollution, roadside trading, illegal motor parks and encroachment on pedestrian walkways.

He said investigations uncovered a disturbing act of vandalism beneath the newly completed bridge, where suspected hoodlums allegedly removed iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables and other structural components critical to the safety and integrity of the infrastructure.

“The criminal act poses a serious threat to public safety and undermines the government’s investment in critical infrastructure,” Wahab said.

He added that the enforcement exercise led to the arrest of 27 suspects, who will be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of Lagos State.

The commissioner reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and warned that individuals involved in vandalism, environmental violations and other criminal activities would face the full weight of the law.

The Lagos State Government also reaffirmed its resolve to sustain enforcement operations aimed at safeguarding public assets and ensuring a clean, safe and orderly environment across the state.
