Team Nigeria continued its impressive campaign at the ongoing World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States, after setting a new African U20 record in the mixed 4×100 metres relay, while Jecinta Lawrence, Faith Ezechukwu and Precious Opinion secured qualification for the next stages of their respective events.

The achievements were contained in a press statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Kola Daniel, and made available to journalists on August 6, 2026. Blueprint reports

The Nigerian quartet of Tejiri Godwin, Rosemary Nwankwo, Perfect Faye and Miracle Ezechukwu produced one of the standout performances of the championships, clocking 41.91 seconds to finish second in their heat and qualify for the final.

The impressive time not only established a new Nigerian U20 record but also became the fastest ever recorded by an African U20 team in the mixed 4×100 metres relay, further underlining Nigeria’s growing strength in junior athletics.

Relay team rewrites history

Nigeria’s qualification for the final came after a thrilling race in which the team displayed speed, composure and excellent baton exchanges.

Heading into the final exchange, the Nigerian team was trailing some of the leading contenders, but anchor runner Miracle Ezechukwu produced a breathtaking finish to haul the country back into contention.

Ezechukwu stormed past Germany in the closing metres and almost caught the United States before crossing the finish line.

His outstanding 10.05-second anchor split proved decisive as Nigeria finished second in the heat with a time of 41.91 seconds.

The performance has placed the Nigerian quartet firmly among the medal contenders heading into the final, with hopes high that they can convert their record-breaking display into a podium finish.

Lawrence, Faith advance in women’s 400m

Nigeria also enjoyed success in the women’s 400 metres, with Jecinta Lawrence and Faith Ezechukwu both progressing to the semifinals after solid performances in their respective heats.

Lawrence showed determination and resilience in a closely contested race, stopping the clock at 53.97 seconds. She finished in a dead heat for third place alongside Eni Kuske, with both athletes awarded the same time to progress.

Faith Ezechukwu also delivered a composed performance, finishing third in her heat in 54.38 seconds to earn one of the automatic qualification spots for the semifinals.

The qualification of both athletes gives Nigeria two strong representatives in the next round as they continue their quest for places in the final.

Opinion books triple jump final ticket

There was more good news for Team Nigeria in the men’s triple jump as Precious Opinion secured qualification for the final with a personal best performance.

Opinion produced a leap of 16.02 metres during the qualification round to surpass the automatic qualification standard of 16.00 metres.

His effort earned him a place among the top five qualifiers heading into the final, putting him in contention for a podium finish.

The personal best also highlighted the steady improvement of the young Nigerian athlete, who will now be aiming to challenge some of the world’s best junior triple jumpers.

Momentum builds for Team Nigeria

The latest performances have further boosted Team Nigeria’s confidence as the championships enter the decisive stages.

The relay team’s African record, coupled with Nigeria’s progress in the women’s 400 metres and men’s triple jump, reflects the country’s growing depth of talent at the junior level.

The achievements also come shortly after Jessica Oji’s historic triumph in the women’s shot put, where she became the first Nigerian athlete to win a gold medal in a field event at the World U20 Athletics Championships with a winning throw of 18.08 metres.

With several athletes still in contention across different events, Nigeria’s prospects of adding more medals before the end of the championships remain bright.
