Fifty youths in Kaduna State have been equipped with practical skills in GSM phone repairs and maintenance following the completion of a two-week intensive training programme organised by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in collaboration with Ofy Multi Dynamic Ltd.

The training, which ended on Thursday, was designed to empower the beneficiaries with technical and entrepreneurial skills needed to establish their own businesses, create jobs and participate actively in the telecommunications value chain.

Participants were trained in phone hardware and software troubleshooting, screen and battery replacement, soldering, unlocking, flashing, virus removal and customer service, among other areas.

The programme also exposed the beneficiaries to business management and quality assurance, with the organisers saying the additional training was aimed at helping them build sustainable businesses rather than merely acquire technical skills.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, representatives of NCDMB said the initiative was in line with the Board’s mandate to deepen Nigerian Content through skills acquisition, human capital development and youth empowerment.

The Board noted that the increasing dependence on mobile devices had made GSM repair services a high-demand business with significant opportunities for young Nigerians seeking self-employment.

The lead facilitator from Ofy Multi Dynamic Ltd commended the participants for their commitment and discipline throughout the training, saying the skills acquired would position them to become job creators rather than job seekers.

The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to NCDMB and Ofy Multi Dynamic Ltd, describing the initiative as timely and transformative. They said they were prepared to put their new skills to work by establishing repair outlets and using the income generated to support themselves and their families.

As part of the empowerment package, the 50 beneficiaries received starter packs containing phone repair tool kits, certificates of completion and financial support to enable them commence small-scale businesses immediately.

NCDMB reaffirmed its commitment to expanding technical and vocational training programmes across the country, stressing that such initiatives would help tackle unemployment and increase the number of skilled Nigerian technicians in line with the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act.
