On Friday, the Senate clarified that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will not be integrated into the new state police system, citing constitutional limitations.

The Senate Committee on Media and Publicity Chairman, Yemi Adaramodu, explained that Abuja lacks the necessary institutions, such as a governor and a State House of Assembly, to establish its own police force.

According to Adaramodu, the FCT is directly overseen by the Federal Government, with a minister acting on instructions from the Federal Executive Council and legislative functions handled by the National Assembly.

Adaramodu addressed concerns about why the FCT was excluded from the state police plan, noting that its status differs from the 36 states.

“The FCT is under the Federal Government. Since Abuja does not have a governor or a state legislature, adopting the same police system as the states is not feasible.

“Instead, he said, responsibilities remain with federal authorities and the existing federal police.
