The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested some youths suspected of being involved in the alleged gang rape and subsequent death of a young girl, identified as Fatima Bizo, aged 27, in Yarume village, Wamakko Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which has reportedly generated concern among residents of the community, allegedly occurred when the suspects subjected the victim to sexual assault before her death.
Sources in the area said the suspects allegedly used rope to tight and strangle her to death after the incident, although the exact circumstances surrounding her death remained still unclear as police investigations are ongoing.
The deceased, identified as Fatima Bizo has since been buried according to Islamic rites.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said the suspects had been arrested and were currently being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the command.
He said the suspects were undergoing investigation, stressing that the police would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and take appropriate action based on the outcome of the investigation.
The police spokesman urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
The development has heightened calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the girl’s death and for anyone found culpable to face the full weight of the law.
