African countries are gaining more influence beyond their borders through culture, diplomacy, business, sport and international engagement.
The 2026 Brand Finance Global Soft Power Index ranks countries according to how they are viewed around the world. The index uses public perceptions and other measures to assess areas including international relations, business, culture, governance and influence.
The United States leads the global ranking with a score of 74.9, followed by China with 73.5.
Among African countries, Egypt is the continent’s highest-ranked nation at 40th globally, with a score of 44.8. South Africa follows at 43rd, while Morocco ranks 50th.
Nigeria is the fourth-highest African country on the list, with its cultural exports and technology sector contributing to its international reach.

Here are the 10 African countries that recorded the highest soft power scores in the 2026 index.
1. Egypt – 44.8
Egypt ranks 40th globally and leads Africa with a score of 44.8.
Its influence is linked to its history, cultural production and role in African and Arab affairs. Egypt’s film and media industries have audiences across the region, while its diplomatic role gives it a voice in discussions involving Africa and the Middle East.
2. South Africa – 44.2
South Africa ranks 43rd globally with a score of 44.2.
Its global presence comes from its cultural industries, sport, business community and participation in international organisations. The country also plays a role in regional diplomacy and discussions on issues affecting Africa.
3. Morocco – 40.6
Morocco ranks 50th globally, recording a score of 40.6.
Its international profile is supported by diplomatic ties, trade, tourism, education and cultural exchanges. Its relationships with African, European and Arab countries have also expanded its role in regional affairs.
4. Nigeria – 37.4
Nigeria ranks 71st globally with a score of 37.4.
Its influence is strongly connected to Nollywood, Afrobeats and its technology sector. Nigerian music and film have audiences across Africa and among communities abroad. The country also remains a major participant in West African diplomacy and trade.
5. Algeria – 36.8
Algeria ranks 74th globally with a score of 36.8.
Its position is supported by its diplomatic activity, energy sector and historical links across North Africa. Literature, music and other cultural exports also contribute to the country’s international presence.
6. Tunisia – 36.7
Tunisia ranks 75th globally with a score of 36.7.
Its influence includes diplomacy, education, heritage and participation in African and Arab affairs. The country’s political history and engagement with international institutions also contribute to its standing.
7. Kenya – 35.0
Kenya ranks 88th globally with a score of 35.0.
Its influence extends beyond tourism through diplomacy, business, technology, media and regional engagement. Nairobi’s role as a centre for international organisations and businesses also gives Kenya a platform in global discussions.
8. Tanzania – 34.3
Tanzania ranks 94th globally with a score of 34.3.
Its influence is linked to diplomacy, regional cooperation and cultural heritage. The country also participates in East African trade and development discussions, giving it a role in continental affairs.
9. Ghana – 34.1
Ghana ranks 95th globally with a score of 34.1.
Its democratic record, music, literature and diplomatic engagement contribute to its international profile. Ghana also plays a role in West African affairs and has built connections with its diaspora.
10. Mauritius – 34.1
Mauritius ranks 96th globally with a score of 34.1.
Its influence comes from diplomacy, finance, education and its position in the Indian Ocean. Its participation in multilateral organisations also gives the country a platform in African and international discussions.
