Nigeria’s Super Falcons have lost their automatic qualification route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The result means Nigeria will not be among the four African teams that will qualify directly for the World Cup in Brazil.

However, the Super Falcons still have a chance to qualify for the tournament.

Nigeria can now take the longer route through the African play-offs and, if successful, the FIFA inter-confederation play-off tournament.

Nigeria must win the African play-off

The four teams that lose their quarter-final matches at the WAFCON will enter a separate African play-off competition.

The four teams will compete for two places in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament.

This means Nigeria must win its African play-off match to keep its World Cup hopes alive.

A defeat in the play-off would end the Super Falcons’ hopes of qualifying for the 2027 World Cup.

What happens if Nigeria wins?

If Nigeria wins the African play-off, the Super Falcons will become one of Africa’s two representatives at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament.

For the 2027 World Cup, Africa has four automatic qualification places and two additional places through the play-off tournament.

The two African teams that win their WAFCON play-offs will join teams from other confederations in the global play-off tournament.

Nigeria will then face a tougher global play-off

The FIFA Play-Off Tournament will feature 10 teams competing for the final three World Cup places.

The first stage will involve six teams: two from Africa, two from Asia, one from South America and one from Oceania.

The teams will be ranked before the draw. The top two-ranked teams will automatically advance to the final stage, while the other four teams will compete for the remaining places.

The final stage will have six teams divided into three groups or paths.

Each path will be decided by a knockout match, with the three winners earning the final three tickets to the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Super Falcons still have a chance

Although the defeat to Cameroon has made Nigeria’s route to the World Cup more difficult, the Super Falcons are still in the race.

Nigeria must first win its African play-off and then win again in the FIFA global play-off tournament.

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil, with 32 teams expected to take part.

For Nigeria, the immediate target is clear: win the African play-off or the dream of playing at the 2027 Women’s World Cup will come to an end.
