A 34-year-old man known to his friends and family as 50 was fatally shot and two others were wounded during an argument on a South Side street in Englewood on Friday night, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Friday, three men were outside in the 700 block of West 73rd Street when they became involved in an argument with someone who pulled out a weapon and opened fire in their direction, police said.

The Victims

Arvell W. Lyons, 34, of the Douglas neighborhood was struck multiple times in the body.

He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

His death was confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A 50-year-old man was shot in the back and also suffered a graze wound to the arm.

He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and listed in fair condition.

A 20-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the left thigh.

He made his way to the University of Chicago Medical Center on his own and was listed in fair condition.

A Community in Mourning

Friends and family took to social media Friday night to mourn the loss of Arvell Lyons, who was known to those close to him as 50.

One person who grew up with Lyons described him as a fixture in their childhood community, sharing memories of weekend gatherings and neighborhood life together going back years.

His cousin described their bond as inseparable, writing that she had lost her favorite cousin, her brother, her best friend, and her protector. She wrote that she was not ready for this and that her heart was heavy over his loss.

Another family member revealed that Arvell’s death was the second devastating loss the family has suffered in less than two months, asking for prayers of strength and protection for the Lyons family as they face yet another heartbreaking loss.

One friend wrote that they had just shared a moment and a hug with Lyons shortly before learning of his death.

No Arrests

No one was in custody as of Saturday morning. Chicago Police detectives are investigating the shooting.
