The Nigerian Navy has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to curb militancy and other maritime crimes in the Niger Delta, following the raid of a suspected militant camp in Fununu Community, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa state.

Personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso carried out the operation on August 6, 2026, based on credible intelligence linking the camp to attacks on communities around Formosa Island.

The operation also led to the arrest of three persons allegedly associated with a wanted militant kingpin, Mr. Sunday Godlaw, who is accused of terrorising neighbouring communities and involvement in various criminal activities, including illegal black-sand mining, sea robbery and piracy.

The troops, led by the Base Operations Officer, Lt. Cdr. Success Chukwu, swiftly moved into the area and raided the suspected camp.

Those arrested were identified as 58-year-old Mrs. Egoibiye Warri; 65-year-old Mr. Jacob Jugbu; and 19-year-old Mr. John Ibogomo.

A search of the camp reportedly yielded a pump-action rifle with two live cartridges, three AK-47 magazines, four walkie-talkies, a ballistic vest, two camouflage uniforms, mobile phones, a power bank, machetes and a motorcycle.

The recovery of the weapons and other items is expected to form part of the ongoing investigation into the activities of the suspected militant network and its alleged operations within the waterways and communities of the area.

Speaking after the operation, the Commanding Officer, FOB Formoso, Capt. S.K. Haruna, commended the troops for what he described as a successful operation marked by professionalism, courage and operational discipline.

He also noted that the operation was conducted without any casualty.
However, the alleged militant kingpin, Sunday Godlaw, reportedly escaped from the camp alongside other suspects during the operation.

The three arrested suspects and the recovered items were subsequently handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS), Bayelsa State Command, on August 7, 2026, by the Base Operations Officer for further investigation and necessary action.

The operation underscores the Nigerian Navy’s renewed efforts to dismantle criminal and militant networks operating within vulnerable communities and waterways in the Niger Delta.

The Navy’s continued operations in the region are also aimed at strengthening security, protecting coastal communities and ensuring that the waterways remain safe for legitimate economic activities.
