SPANISH football superstar Alexia Putellas has begun a new chapter with London City Lionesses after leaving Barcelona following an illustrious 14-year career with the Spanish club.
Putellas, 32, joined London City Lionesses this summer in a move described as one of the biggest signings in Women’s Super League history.
The two-time Ballon d’Or winner and Spain World Cup champion said she was fully committed to helping her new club achieve its ambitions.
“I’m 100 per cent committed. I’m hungry to win, I’m hungry to be better day after day and to fight with my team-mates for the victory,” she said.
Putellas joined Barcelona in 2012 after previous spells with Espanyol and Levante, beginning an extraordinary period in which she won 38 trophies with the Catalan club.
Her honours included 10 league titles and four European Cups, while she also won the Ballon d’Or in 2021 and 2022.
Internationally, Putellas helped Spain win the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and finish runners-up at the 2025 European Championship.
Despite her achievements, the midfielder said she remained determined to continue improving as a player.
“Yeah, of course. Always. Day after day, I want to learn things,” she said.
“That’s the way I see this job. Just keep going, never stop and be as good as I can.”
Putellas said her move to London City Lionesses was partly motivated by the desire to discover her limits as a footballer.
She acknowledged that the move represented a significant change, having left Champions League football to join an independent women-only club still in the early stages of development.
“I’m going to bring to the project whatever it needs from me,” she said.
The midfielder also credited her experience at Barcelona with shaping her understanding of the game and her ability to communicate with team-mates on the pitch.
London City manager Eder Maestre has described Putellas as almost a secondary coach during training, saying she can influence the way the team plays.
Putellas explained that passing could serve as a form of communication, with the strength and direction of a pass conveying instructions to team-mates.
She said her experience at Barcelona had helped her develop an ability to understand what was happening during matches and anticipate opponents’ movements.
Away from football, Putellas is adjusting to life in England, including searching for accommodation, learning to drive in London and improving her English.
She has also begun experiencing British culture, although she admitted that baked beans served as part of a traditional English breakfast did not appeal to her.
Putellas said the move had presented challenges but remained excited about beginning the new season with London City.
London City Lionesses are scheduled to open their season against Manchester United on Sept. 4.
Putellas said she was looking forward to the challenge and hoped to make a strong contribution to her new team.
“I always need to be moving as a person and a player,” she said.
