The Presidency and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have renewed their war of words over the country’s security situation and reported killings, with both sides trading accusations over the government’s handling of insecurity.

In Osun State, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by ex-Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has endorsed the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of Saturday’s election.

Meanwhile, former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola has publicly spoken about his marital fidelity, declaring that he has never slept with another woman.

In Lagos, the cost of renting a two-bedroom apartment on Lagos Island has risen to N17.25m, highlighting the growing housing burden in the state.

Presidency, Atiku clash over Nigeria insecurity, killings

The Presidency has rejected former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s criticism of the Federal Government over the reported killing of 5,091 Nigerians in violent incidents within three months. Atiku had described the figure as an indictment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and accused the government of failing in its responsibility to protect lives and property.

Responding, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, said security agencies had killed between 13,000 and 20,000 terrorists during the same period and rescued at least 10,000 Nigerians from captivity. He accused Atiku of deliberately ignoring the government’s security achievements for political reasons.

The Force spokesperson, Ani Iniedu, also disputed Atiku’s assessment, saying available security data indicated that violent crime had reduced significantly over the past six months. Atiku, who is contesting the 2027 presidential election on the African Democratic Congress platform, has continued to criticise the Tinubu administration’s handling of insecurity.

Osun 2026: Oyinlola-led PDP faction backs APC’s Oyebamiji

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State led by former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has endorsed the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of Saturday’s election. Oyinlola said the decision followed concerns over what the group described as a lack of inclusiveness in Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.

Oyinlola, however, stressed that the group had not defected from the PDP. He said the members remained PDP loyalists but were exercising their conscience by backing Oyebamiji, whom they believed could provide a different direction for the state.

The former governor urged Oyebamiji, if elected, to prioritise inclusive governance, economic development, infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and youth empowerment. Oyebamiji welcomed the endorsement and promised to run an inclusive government.

Lagos Island two-bedroom rent hits N17.25m

The cost of renting a two-bedroom apartment on  Lagos Island has climbed to N17.25m, highlighting the continuing pressure on housing costs in one of Nigeria’s most expensive urban centres.

The development reflects the wider rise in rental costs in Lagos, where demand for accommodation, limited supply in prime locations and other market pressures continue to push rents upward.

The sharp increase is likely to further intensify concerns over housing affordability for residents, particularly workers and families seeking accommodation close to commercial and employment centres.

Lagos law student dies after jumping from four-storey building

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of 23-year-old Nigerian Law School student, Faith Alayande, who reportedly died after allegedly jumping from the rooftop of a four-storey hostel building at the institution’s campus in Victoria Island

The police said the incident was reported after the student was found unresponsive at the hostel on Friday. According to the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, the deceased reportedly wrote a suicide note before jumping from the rooftop. Her body was subsequently evacuated to a morgue.

The incident is being investigated by the police. It is also not the first reported case involving a Nigerian Law School student dying by suicide, with PUNCH Metro reporting a similar case in December 2025 involving a student at the Yola campus.
