Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has appealed to Osun voters to support the party in Saturday’s governorship election.
Atiku spoke at the ADC mega rally held at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, where he thanked the people of the state for their support during previous elections.
He said, “Each time I stood here you gave me your vote, I can not forget that and the reason is that your daughter is in my house, I came here for the current Governor, I pleaded with you to support him and you voted for him, I came here on my presidential campaign and you voted for me you defeated President Bola Tinubu for me.
He urged the voters to support the ADC in the forthcoming governorship election, describing the party as different from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Accord and other political parties.
According to him, “I have come today and am appealing to you that, on August 15 governorship election, you should vote for ADC I believe you will not regret voting ADC, and this is because ADC I can assure you is different from APC, Accord, and all other parties because the best of Nigerians are today in the ADC.”
Also speaking, Senator David Mark, the national chairman of ADC said the party was in Osun to celebrate what he described as the anticipated victory the people of the state would give the ADC after Saturday’s election.
Mark urged voters not to entertain fear and called on them to protect their votes.
Rauf Aregbesola, the national secretary of the party used the rally to dismiss speculation that the ADC was in alliance or negotiation with another political party ahead of the election.
He said ADC was standing on its own and remained the political organisation that carried the “flagship, philosophy and vision” of the late Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
In his remarks, Najeem Salaam, the ADC governorship candidate urged residents not to be afraid to come out and vote for the ADC, assuring them that security would be available to protect them on election day.
He promised to prioritise the welfare of women, civil servants and pensioners, saying the choice of a woman as his running mate was intended to ensure better representation for women in government.
Salaam also promised free primary and secondary education and said his administration would establish an organisation to reduce fees in higher institutions, adding that children between one and 18 years would receive free healthcare in government hospitals, while pregnant women would receive free healthcare until delivery.
