A yet-to-be-identified man has proposed to his girlfriend at the Osun-Osogbo Festival, a year after the pair first met at the annual cultural celebration.

According to a video shared by Motherland TV on Instagram, the couple returned to the festival this year, where the man surprised his girlfriend with a marriage proposal.

The proposal was simple and intimate, with the couple dressed in understated outfits as flower pieces were arranged on a traditional mat.

In the short but romantic moment, the man got down on one knee and asked his girlfriend to marry him.

She also knelt during the proposal, drawing attention from viewers.

Motherland TV explained that kneeling can, within Yoruba culture, be a personal expression of respect and appreciation.

The platform described the moment as an expression of Ìwà Ọmọlúàbí — good character, respect and shared values.

It wrote, “They met at the Osun-Osogbo Festival last year. This year, they returned to the same sacred celebration and he proposed!”

It added, “Beautiful, heartwarming, and unforgettable. This is more than a proposal; it is a love story coming full circle at Osun-Osogbo.”

The platform also congratulated the couple, describing them as “our very own Igbalode Yoruba couple”, and offered to document their wedding.

The proposal has since attracted reactions online, with many viewers celebrating the couple for turning the festival where their relationship began into the setting for another significant milestone.

The Osun-Osogbo Festival is one of Nigeria’s most prominent cultural and religious festivals and is centred around the Osun Sacred Grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 2026 edition, themed “Preserving Heritage, Inspiring the Future,” ran from July 27 to August 7.

The festival’s grand finale held on August 7, with traditional rites taking place at the sacred grove.

The event attracted worshippers, tourists, cultural enthusiasts and visitors from within and outside Nigeria, with organisers earlier projecting about 500,000 participants.

Security was also heightened around the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove during the festival following recent cult-related killings in Osun State.

The festival was attended by traditional and cultural leaders, including the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji, Larooye II.

For the couple, however, the festival appears to have taken on an even more personal meaning, from the place where they first met to the place where one of them asked the other to spend the rest of their lives together.
