The New Nigeria Peoples Party says that, in spite of delays arising from litigation, the party was able to field candidates for over 90 per cent of all elective positions in the 2027 general elections nationwide.
The Founder of the party, Boniface Aniebonam, stated this in Lagos on Tuesday while speaking with newsmen after the party’s emergency National Working Committee meeting, which held in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the closed-door meeting, which held at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa, Lagos, was attended by NNPP NWC members from across the country.
The NNPP founder said that fielding candidates across all positions did not rule out strategic alliances with political parties that had similar interests and ideologies as the NNPP ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The NNPP, as you all know, has had so much delays. We are happy we have surmounted most of it. In the following weeks, Nigerians will begin to see and meet our candidates in their various states.
“We can work with parties, where we feel they have stronger hold and vice versa,” Aniebonam said.
On why the NNPP would not zone its presidential ticket, Aniebonam explained that zoning applied to political parties that had contested and won the presidency and not those yet to win.
The founder said, “If we will ever consider zoning, it is to be when we would have won a presidential election.
“However, the NNPP has never supported the idea of zoning. We believe that the best person with integrity who can deliver should be allowed.
“Even if successors have to come from the same region, as long as they deliver on good governance.”
He said that the party would hold a non-elective convention before the end of August to enable members to interact on several issues concerning the party.
“NNPP members have a lot of decisions to make on some issues that we do not want to be deliberated upon by the NWC alone. We want inclusive decision making on those issues,” he said.
Aniebonam urged members who had left the NNPP in the wake of its internal leadership crisis to return immediately ahead of the replacement of placeholders.
