The Kano State Fire Service on Monday contained two separate fire outbreaks at an Access Bank branch in Dawanau, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, and a residential building in Sabuwar Gandu, Sheka Gari, Kumbotso Local Government Area.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.

According to the statement, the incidents occurred at about 1:17 pm and 6:19 pm respectively. The first incident was reported to the service’s Emergency Response Unit by a caller identified as Michael, who alerted the agency to the fire at the Access Bank branch in Dawanau.

“Firefighters from the Dawanau Fire Station immediately responded to the distress call and arrived at the scene to find a one-storey building measuring about 100 by 80 feet being used as a bank.

“The fire affected a Mikano generator, which was fully engulfed, while an electrical transformer was slightly affected,” the statement said.

The firefighters, however, successfully brought the situation under control and prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the bank building.

“The responding firefighters successfully contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the bank building,” the statement said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The second incident occurred at about 6:19 pm at Sabuwar Gandu, Sheka Gari, in Kumbotso Local Government Area.

The Emergency Call Centre received a distress call from Ahmad Mainama, prompting firefighters from the Sharada Industrial Area Fire Station to immediately proceed to the scene.

The firefighters found a ground-floor residential building measuring about 40 by 30 feet on fire.

The blaze affected two bedrooms, a parlour and a kitchen.

The firefighters brought the situation under control using one jet from Commando 3, Sharada Fire Truck, supported by two additional jets from nearby factories.

“The situation was successfully brought under control through the coordinated efforts of our men and support from nearby factories,” the statement added.

The cause of the second fire is also under investigation.

Reacting to the incidents, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent fire outbreaks.

Anas particularly advised households to equip their homes with functional fire extinguishers and ensure that basic fire-safety measures were observed.

“We appeal to members of the public to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to reduce the incidence of fire outbreaks,” the director said.

He added, “Every household should have a functional fire extinguisher and ensure that appropriate fire-safety measures are observed at all times.”

The service urged residents to promptly report fire incidents to enable firefighters to respond quickly and prevent avoidable loss of lives and property.
