Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy Permanent Secretary Fatima Sugra Tabi’a Mahmood has pledged institutional support for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food for Progress Programme in Nigeria. She stated that the initiative will strengthen the fisheries and aquaculture value chain and improve food security.
Mahmood made this commitment in Abuja while receiving a delegation from Partners of the Americas, the implementing partner for the USDA programme, led by Gustavo Galdo.
According to a statement signed by Director of Information and Public Relations Anastasia Ogbonna, Mahmood noted that the ministry is prepared to provide policy guidance, institutional support, and coordination. She described the initiative as a strategic intervention that can unlock Nigeria’s blue economy.
The Permanent Secretary emphasised that developing the fisheries and aquaculture sector is vital for domestic fish production, job creation, and poverty reduction. The ministry will collaborate with Partners of the Americas and other stakeholders to ensure the programme aligns with existing government efforts and delivers measurable benefits to operators across the value chain.

Galdo outlined the objectives, implementation strategy, and expected outcomes of the programme, which aims to improve agricultural productivity and expand trade in developing countries. He explained that the Nigerian intervention focuses on boosting protein access, improving inputs and finance, and strengthening market systems.
Baseline studies are already underway to identify productivity constraints, financing needs, and structural bottlenecks. Galdo sought the continued engagement of the ministry to ensure the programme aligns with national development priorities and fosters sustainable growth in Nigeria’s fisheries and aquaculture industry.
