The Nasarawa state Police Command Tuesday called on youths across the state to shun any form of political thuggery and refrain from allowing themselves to be used as instruments of mayhem by politicians or individuals pursuing personal and political interests.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Shetima Jauro, made the call in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), SP Ramhan Nansel.

He urged the youth to participate responsibly in democratic activities while resisting every attempt to manipulate them into engaging in violence, intimidation, destruction of property, assault or attacks on perceived political opponents.

The CP further called on parents and guardians to properly counsel their children and wards against acts capable of undermining peace and security in the state.

“Religious leaders are equally urged to intensify their sermons and teachings on peaceful coexistence, tolerance, respect for divergent political opinions and the need to resolve differences through lawful and peaceful means,” the statement reads.

The command also urged all political office seekers, political parties and their supporters to notify the Police of all political gatherings, rallies, meetings and other organised political activities within the state in good time to enable the police make adequate security arrangements and deploy appropriate personnel to forestall breakdown of law and order.

The statement added that the notification of political gatherings is essential for effective security planning and it should not be viewed as a hindrance to legitimate political activities.

He further warned that any individual caught causing mayhem, attacking members of the public, destroying property, threatening or intimidating others under the guise of political loyalty will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.
