THE European Union has activated a Joint Election Observation Hub for the Osun State governorship election under its EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme.

The Hub brings together civil society organisations implementing the EU-SDGN programme, including Yiaga Africa, the International Press Centre (IPC), the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), TAF Africa, The Kukah Centre and the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF), in a coordinated effort to provide independent, citizen-centred election observation and timely, evidence-based information throughout the electoral process.

The Joint Election Observation Hub will serve as a central coordination platform for receiving, verifying and analysing reports from the 800 accredited observers deployed across Osun State. The partners will monitor key aspects of the election, including the opening of polls, voter accreditation, voting, counting and results collation, as well as the participation of women, young people and persons with disabilities, media coverage, electoral integrity and compliance with electoral guidelines.

Verified information from the field will be analysed in real time and shared through periodic public updates to promote transparency, counter misinformation, strengthen public confidence and encourage peaceful participation before, during and after the election.

The Osun Hub also features an Election ReportPoint, through which voters can call or send WhatsApp messages to report incidents of violence, intimidation, vote buying and other forms of electoral misconduct. Reports can be made through 0706 825 8595 or 0707 116 4610.

Speaking on the initiative, Laolu Olawunmi, Governance Adviser at the Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, said the Hub reflects the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigerian-led efforts to strengthen electoral integrity and democratic accountability.

“The strength of this initiative lies in the fact that Nigerian civil society organisations are bringing together their different areas of expertise, networks and experience to observe the election collectively. It is locally led, locally driven and focused on providing citizens with credible, evidence-based information about the electoral process,” Olawunmi said.

She noted that the Hub goes beyond bringing election observers together in one location, providing a mechanism for consolidating information from different aspects of the electoral process and building a more comprehensive picture of how the election is conducted.

“Credible elections depend on more than what happens at the point where a ballot is cast. We must also pay attention to inclusion, electoral security, information integrity, media coverage, results management and whether citizens are able to participate freely and confidently,” she said.

The Osun Hub builds on similar deployments by EU-SDGN partners during previous elections and reflects an evolving model of coordinated election observation that draws on the expertise of organisations working across election observation, media, inclusion, peacebuilding and citizen participation.

Through the EU-SDGN programme, the European Union supports Nigerian institutions and civil society organisations working to strengthen electoral processes, promote inclusive political participation, deepen citizen engagement, support credible election observation and strengthen democratic accountability.
