The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for the provision of aeronautical meteorological services at the Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.

The agency disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, noting that the achievement followed a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof Charles Anosike, to “ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and continuous upward movement of Nigeria’s rating by WMO and ICAO.”

According to the statement, the three airports were successfully certified under NiMet’s quality management system, ISO 9001:2015, for the provision of aeronautical meteorological services to the aviation industry.

The certification followed a successful third-party audit of NiMet’s products and services provided to airlines at the airports by Certech Inc., Canada, the agency said.

NiMet stated that its services were found to conform to the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard after a rigorous audit conducted from July 20 to 23, 2026.

The agency added that it had also been successfully recertified to the ISO 9001:2015 standard at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Aminu Kano International Airport; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Enugu International Airport; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

The statement said the ISO certification was valid for three years, with annual surveillance and maintenance audits scheduled until the next recertification exercise in 2029.

NiMet said the latest achievement represented a revised certification for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry across Nigerian airports.

According to the agency, the certification covers eight Nigerian international airports, namely Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa; Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport; Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri; and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The agency disclosed that in a letter to Anosike dated July 26, 2026, with the heading, ‘ISO 9001:2015’, the certification agency’s Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, stated that the objectives of the surveillance audit had been achieved.

Strohmeier said, “The audit objectives for the surveillance audit were achieved. A systematic process audit was performed with emphasis on risks and objectives per ISO 9001:2015”.

NiMet said the third-party audit by Certech Inc. Canada subsequently resulted in the issuance of a revised certificate stating, “The Nigerian Meteorological Agency quality management system conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry”.

The agency noted that the latest achievement was particularly significant because it was the first time its aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports were subjected to an audit for certification to the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

Speaking on the development, Anosike said, “We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, has been working round the clock to achieve this feat. We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations.”
