Nigeria’s U-20 men’s national team, the Flying Eagles, have returned to the country and are awaiting a decision from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on their qualification status for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

The team arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 7pm on Tuesday aboard Air Côte d’Ivoire after concluding their campaign at the 2026 West African Football Union (WAFU) B U-20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.

The Flying Eagles finished as runners-up after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in Sunday’s final in Yamoussoukro.

The result prevented Nigeria from winning the WAFU B title for a third consecutive time after their triumphs in 2022 and 2024. The Flying Eagles had also entered this year’s competition as defending champions.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes now rest with CAF

The Flying Eagles’ return to Abuja comes amid uncertainty over the number of qualification slots available to the WAFU B zone for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.

Burkina Faso secured the regional title after defeating Nigeria in the final and would normally take the zone’s qualification ticket under the existing arrangement.

However, Ghana’s hosting of the 2027 continental championship has complicated the qualification process.

Ghana’s automatic qualification creates opening for Nigeria

Ghana has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, meaning the Black Satellites will qualify automatically for the tournament.

The situation has created a dilemma because Ghana also participated in the WAFU B regional championship, which serves as the qualifying competition for the continental tournament.

Nigeria is therefore hoping CAF will allocate an additional qualification slot to WAFU B because Ghana has already secured an automatic place as hosts.

If CAF approves the additional slot, Nigeria, as runners-up, could join Burkina Faso at the 2027 continental championship.

Previous CAF format gives Nigeria hope

Nigeria’s hopes have also been boosted by CAF’s decision during the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The tournament featured 13 teams rather than the traditional 12-team format, showing that the continental governing body has previously adjusted the number of participating teams when necessary.

However, CAF has yet to confirm whether it will adopt a similar arrangement for the 2027 tournament.

Flying Eagles await CAF’s decision

The final decision remains with CAF, with Nigeria hoping the confederation will resolve the unusual qualification situation by granting WAFU B an additional place.

For the Flying Eagles, qualification would provide an opportunity to move past their disappointing defeat to Burkina Faso and compete for another continental title.

Nigeria remains the most successful nation in the history of the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, having won the competition seven times.

The country has traditionally been a major force in African youth football, making qualification for the 2027 tournament a significant objective for the team.

Ghana prepares to host continental tournament

Ghana will host the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, marking its return as host of the competition after last staging the tournament in 1999.

Until CAF announces its decision, Burkina Faso remain the only WAFU B side certain to have qualified through the regional competition.

Nigeria’s continental hopes therefore remain alive as the Flying Eagles await clarification on whether an additional WAFU B slot will be created for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
