Inside a hall on the campus of the Africa University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, the lights don’t flicker, internet doesn’t drop, students huddle over laptops, weld metal in a workshop, and watch a 3D printer build a prototype layer by layer as the President of AUST, Professor Peter Onwualu, discloses in this piece. Blueprint.ng correspondent writes.
Technology, solution to infrastructure
Outside, Nigeria contends with the same problems it has for decades: power cuts, bad roads, and an economy where many industries struggle to survive.
“Within the hub all the constraints you would otherwise have in the wider society are eliminated,” the President of AUST, Professor Peter Onwualu explains: “You have power, you have internet, you have mentors, you have finance. That’s how innovation actually works.”
The hall referred by him is the ‘AUST INSPIRE’, the university’s innovation hub. As Africa battles infrastructure gaps and mass youth unemployment, AUST is trying to turn the university itself into a factory for solutions: startups, skilled technicians, and the data systems to run a modern economy.
The twin crisis: infrastructure and jobs
The diagnosis is blunt. Across Africa, from health to agriculture to transportation, infrastructure is the bottleneck. “Many of our industries are struggling to survive again because of the infrastructure problems. At the same time, universities keep graduating millions. You look at the education sector, it is expanding almost on a daily basis, Most of these people find it difficult to secure jobs. The answer, cannot be waiting for the national grid or for government alone. It has to be technology and the young people who can build it. That’s why innovation hubs have exploded across the continent. From South Africa to Rwanda, Kenya to Nigeria, these spaces bundle together what the outside economy lacks: reliable power, bandwidth, equipment, business training, and access to venture capital. The idea is simple: incubate startups inside a bubble where failure is cheaper, and let success spill outward.”
The hub inside AUST
Most governments are building hubs. AUST decided to affix its own directly on campus i.e. AUST INSPIRE where everything works, which is designed to enjoy and transfer electricity, water, internet, a good working environment and, crucially, innovative minds. A good innovation hub that also has a network of experienced innovators who will be teaching the younger ones.
“A hub is not just about tech. There is also the expertise in business and finance, Students learn how to turn ideas into companies, and how to access grants, loans, and venture capital. Without that, you can’t transform an idea into a business, but if you don’t have the resources to implement that business, the business will still fail.
“Market access matters too. He points to competition from imports. You can produce something but somebody from China using economies of scale may have a similar product at one-ninth the price.” Hubs, must help startups reach markets so they don’t get crushed on day one.
The model is already showing results elsewhere. “When you have this kind of ecosystem within a university, within a very short time you begin to have, every year, a group of startups that have succeeded. And these things have a multiplier effect.”
For AUST, the ambition goes beyond research papers. “A university will now gradually become a place where you don’t just do research and teaching only. The research does not end up just in the library or in the laboratory, but that research can now move from being an idea to a product.”
From degrees to skills: the TVET push
“Degrees alone aren’t enough. That’s why AUST has expanded into technical and vocational education. The National Universities Commission curriculum already mandates skills. At 200 level, engineering students do ‘Students Work Experience’ in workshops. Welding, masonry, plumbing, machine tooling. At 300 and 400 level, they go on industrial attachments for months. But AUST says that’s not enough. So it’s building a full Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) environment on campus.
“Students are embedded in real projects. The university’s solar rollout for hostels? Students are on the site learning hands-on. The engineering workshop now teaches woodwork, welding, and machine fabrication. A 3D printing lab lets students design with CAD and then build it. And it’s not just for degree students. “We are not doing this only for our students. It’s open to the public,” he says. Artisans from outside can come, get trained, and crucially, get certified.
“Before, it’s not just that you learn how to do something. You actually get certified. You become real professionals at that level. The training is also future-facing: electric cars, drones, emerging technologies. “As they are learning these things, they are learning about how to use them to develop devices and technologies for solving problems.”
Single identity for each 200 million people
The third piece of the puzzle is data. AUST has entered a partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), to work on digital identity, cybersecurity, and AI.
“Nigeria and other African countries, has challenges with data management systems. Critically speaking, Nigeria isn’t there yet because one individual in this country has probably 10 numbers. Each for university, healthcare, NIN, another for passport, etc. That’s where technology is applied. As far back as 1987 when I went to do my PhD in Canada. I remember I got sick at some point and I went to hospital. As soon as I got to the hospital, all they asked was my number, my social insurance number equivalent of NIN. And as soon as they punched the number into their system, everything about me came up. Now, if after attending that hospital, if I get sick again and maybe in different city, once I get into any hospital, and the same number is used, the history comes up. With this development, one would be relieved from delay and unnecessary questions.
“Once we have the person’s number, we can access that central database and know everything about the person. A unified system would change that. It would also create “big data” for 200 million people. That data could help governance, health, and even security. “It can also help in solving our security problem because everybody is known. It goes beyond humans. Every animal in this country will also have a number, traceability for cows and agriculture. It applies to minerals too.
“But with big data comes big risk. AI can now fake a person’s face and voice. Somebody can actually create you and make you say what you never said. The NIMC partnership, is about building the research capacity to manage data securely and trace cyber threats. All of it requires research. These are some of the challenges we want to deal with in this collaboration, so that data management in Nigeria will be better for the economy.”
20 years in, a mission evolves
AUST marks 20 years, in 2027. It began as a purely postgraduate, research-focused university for masters and PhDs. That mission hasn’t changed.
“We are still focused on higher degrees. But the knowledge built over 10 years of postgraduate training is now being “downloaded” to undergraduates and certificate programs. The result is a university trying to do three things at once: produce research, produce startups, and produce skilled workers.
“From the workshop to the data lab, the pitch is the same. Don’t wait for perfect national infrastructure. Build it in microcosms. Train people to use it. Connect ideas to money and to markets. And use data to make the whole system legible. Once one succeeds, two succeeds, other people will begin to take advantage of the idea and how it works. In a continent tired of waiting, that may be the most important innovation of all.”
