The Plateau State political landscape is in mourning following the death of former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Peter Ajang Azi, who passed away on Thursday in Jos.

A statement released by his family confirmed the news, stating that he “peacefully joined his Lord” on the day of his passing.

In a heartfelt announcement signed by John Daniel Azi, the family expressed their deep sorrow, saying, “With total submission to the will of God Almighty, the Azi Ajang Family announce the passing unto glory of their son, brother, and father, Rt. Hon. Peter Ajang Azi.”

The statement also indicated that details regarding burial arrangements would be shared in due course.

Rt. Hon. Azi, who held the esteemed position of Speaker from June 2015 to July 2018, was known for his significant contributions to the governance and development of Plateau State. His tenure was marked by a commitment to the people and a dedication to advancing the political interests of his constituents.

Senator Simon Bako Lalong, currently representing the Plateau South Senatorial District and a former Governor of Plateau State, expressed his profound sorrow over the loss of his esteemed colleague.

He described Azi’s passing as a “painful and devastating loss” not only to his family but also to the wider political community in Plateau State.

Reflecting on Azi’s legacy, Senator Lalong highlighted the former Speaker’s unwavering dedication to public service during the Rescue Administration, where he played a pivotal role in shaping policies that impacted the lives of many.

“Rt. Hon. Azi was a trusted political ally and a committed member of the All Progressives Congress,”

Lalong noted his humility, loyalty, and steadfast commitment to serving the grassroots will be sorely missed.

Senator Lalong, who also leads the Conference of Former Speakers of State Houses of Assembly of Nigeria (COFFSHA), recognized Azi’s active participation in the organization, championing the cause of good governance and legislative integrity.

He stated, Rt. Hon. Peter Azi was not only a former Speaker and distinguished public servant; he was a brother, a dependable political ally, and a strong member of our political family. His death has left a painful void that will be difficult to fill.

Senator Lalong extended heartfelt sympathies on behalf of his family, the people of Plateau South Senatorial District, and COFFSHA to the Azi family, friends, and political associates.

He prayed for the Almighty God to grant the family the strength to cope with this irreparable loss while asking for eternal rest for the soul of Rt. Hon. Peter Ajang Azi.
